School librarians shelved by the net

School librarians fear they under threat from internet-obsessed principals who believe students of the information generation can find everything they need online.Librarians going out quietly?

Some principals do have it partly correct 'so much info available online'.So much to sift through to get to what you really want, need and will gain knowledge from. Many students can do a cut and paste without learning much at all.
Now, finding relevant info, (with the explosion of info readily availabe online) using it, learning from and with it ... that s where the teacher librarian steps in.
It's a vital role, teaching/guiding/supporting students how to 'learn! Not just for school learning, it's a life skill!
De Bono article in March 14 Sun Herald p.16 "Schools must teach thinking'. Teacher librarians do!
School librarian role has CHANGED. Gone are the days of the librarian just reading a story and helping locate books, some of us are the dynamic force upskilling students, other staff and the principal using information technology, while encouraging an appreciation of literature, and recommending good books to enjoy and learn from.
Suppose change is hard for some, yes I admit I'm a teacher librarian that, at times, still wears her hair in a bun.
As to "librarians going out quietly"
Bring it on!
Meet you in the library....
(maybe we should be discussing school staffing formulas - NOT redirecting TLs to help bring class numbers down, or other cost cutting strategies?)
Cheers
TL Sydney
